How do I create a new product variation by editing item attributes?

Learn how editing an inventory item’s attributes can update an existing product variation or create a new variation within a product group.

Product variations are based on the attributes used to group similar inventory items. When you edit attributes on an item that belongs to a product group, Pavilion may update the existing variation or create a new one.

Use this workflow when you need to change the attributes for one item in a product group, such as size, color, metal, finish, or another variation-defining attribute.

Before you begin

Editing attributes can affect how an item is grouped.

If you update only the current item, Pavilion may move that item into a new product variation.

If you apply the change to all items in the variation, Pavilion updates the existing variation instead.

Edit attributes for one item in a product variation

  1. Open App Launcher.

  2. Search for Product Groups.

  3. Open the Product Group record.

  4. In the Product Group Items table, find the product variation that contains the item you want to update.

  5. Click the Item ID for the specific inventory item you want to edit.

  6. Update the item’s attributes as needed.

  7. Click Save.

  8. When prompted, choose how the attribute change should be applied.

  9. Click Only this item if you want to update only the selected inventory item. Pavilion will create or move the item into a product variation with a new attribute combination.

  10. Click Apply to all if you want the change to apply to all items in the same product variation. Pavilion will update the existing product variation.

  11. Review the product group to confirm the item appears under the correct product variation.

When to use Apply to all

Use Apply to all when the attribute change should apply to every item currently grouped under that variation.

For example, if the variation was grouped with the wrong shared attribute, selecting Apply to all updates the existing variation instead of splitting one item into a new variation.

What happens after saving

After the change is saved, Pavilion updates the product group based on the selected option.

The item may remain in the same product variation, move to another existing variation, or create a new variation if the new attribute combination does not already exist.
