What are product groups and product variations?

Learn how product groups organize similar inventory items, how product variations are created, and when to use product groups in Pavilion.

Product groups let you group similar inventory items into one shared product record. This is useful when multiple inventory items should be shown together as one product, such as the same ring available in different sizes, metals, or colors.

A product group is made up of product variations. Each product variation represents one unique combination of variation attributes.

When to use product groups

Use product groups when you have multiple inventory items that should be presented as one product.

For example, you may use a product group for:

  • The same wedding band in multiple sizes

  • The same chain in different lengths

  • The same ring in different metal colors

  • Similar items that should appear together online

Instead of managing each item as a completely separate product, Pavilion can group the items and generate product variations based on their attributes.

How product variations are created

When inventory items are added to a product group, Pavilion creates product variations based on the item attributes.

Variation names are created from the attributes that are different across the items in the group. Attribute values that are the same for every item are not included in the variation name.

For example, if four items share the same metal but have different metal colors and sizes, Pavilion may create variations based on the unique color and size combinations.

Example

Four inventory items are added to a product group.

In this example, Metal is the same for every item, so it is not included in the variation name.

If Finish is not marked as a variation attribute, it is also not included in the variation name.

Pavilion creates three variations:

  1. Yellow, 8

  2. White, 8

  3. Pink, 9

Variation attributes

Variation attributes determine which item details are used to create product variations.

If an attribute should be used for product variations but is not appearing as expected, contact your Pavilion administrator. The attribute may need to be marked as a variation attribute.

What you can do with product groups

After a product group is created, you can:

  • Add inventory items to the group

  • Add items to an existing product group

  • Edit product variation prices

  • Add or update product variation images

  • Remove items from a product group

  • Print tags for product group items

  • Manage how grouped products appear online
